Cambodia was an incredible outreach to the extremes. It was confronting in a sense that “sex for sale” is everywhere and it’s very difficult to go through Phnom Penh and not see it. However, we we’re able to be apart of the hope that is there. There a quite a few organizations helping and rescuing girls from trafficking or high risk situations and specializing in the after care and provision of skills to be reintegrated into society with dignity.
The few rehabilitation homes and NGO’s (Non government organizations) we worked with, although at times it was a heavy environment, gave the team a hands on experience to be Jesus, and in that grow as a team, and as an individual, gaining a heart for the exploited innocent.
Volunteering with the She Rescue Center, we had the opportunity to interact with 23 girls ranging in age from 4-16 years. One girl in particular had been brought in a week prior to the teams arrival. This 5 year old had been raped, and with the culture, was considered worthless. Her mother then took her to the hotels western tourists would stay at and offer her services for the night. When arriving at the She Rescue, she was distant, and disruptive. But with constant love from the house mothers, the other girls, and the team, toward the end of our time, we began to see her opening up, interacting with the team members, playing, participating in games and activities with the girls, and smiling while singing “Jesus Loves Me, This I Know”.
